National Population Commission to Implement Digital and Transformative Census, Says Muhammad Usman
Muhammad Usman, the Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) in Niger State, has announced that the upcoming population and housing census will be a groundbreaking and environmentally friendly endeavor, setting it apart from previous ones in terms of its digital and transformative nature.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday at the IBB Pen House in Tunga, Minnesota, Usman emphasized that despite the nationwide postponement of the census, the Commission has successfully completed 33 out of the 35 planned activities. The remaining two activities are currently in progress, underscoring the Commission's commitment to conducting a successful and widely accepted census.
As part of the preparations, the Commission has already tested and retested its census application on the recently acquired Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Now, it awaits the directive to commence the census exercise, which will be the responsibility of the incoming administration.
Usman made it clear that the decision of the Federal Government to postpone the 2023 census was not due to any lack of preparedness on the part of the Commission, contrary to suggestions in certain circles.
In his words, "The Commission has achieved significant milestones so far, including enumeration area demarcation, instrument pretest, verification of the second pretest, management training at both the first and second levels, instrument validation, and identification and mapping of special populations, among other accomplishments."
He further emphasized that the Commission has been instructed to continue its tasks, which include mobilization, monitoring, and the review of crucial procedures.
This innovative and forward-thinking approach to the census reflects the Commission's dedication to conducting an accurate, efficient, and technologically advanced population and housing census for the benefit of Nigerians.
